Dairy-Free Mocha Latte Recipe

Now, I’m not saying this little mug of dairy-free mocha latter loveliness will fix the toddler meltdown, the forgotten laundry, or the fact that you’ve reheated your tea three times today. But I am saying it’ll help.

This dairy-free mocha latte has become my special treat of late… especially during the autumn and winter and especially after a frenetic morning. This drink is warm, gently chocolatey, not too sweet and it feels like something you’d order at a café if you had a moment to yourself.
But unlike some of the boxed, “barista” milks, chock full of all sorts of food chemistry to make them frothable, this dairy-free mocha latte uses everyday bits and bobs from your pantry. And no, you don’t need a posh milk frother. Just a blender. Or, in my case, the well-loved smoothie attachment on my Vitamix that also doubles as the Maker of the Morning Smoothie or Smoosher of the Luncheon Soup.
The best part? This mocha latte tastes indulgent, but it’s packed with nourishing fats and zero guilt. Unless you count the sneaky sip you take before the kids notice you’ve made something delicious without them…
The Secret to a Proper Frothy Dairy-Free Mocha Latte
Here’s the thing about most plant-based milks: they’re a bit… thin. Your almond milks, oat milks, even the fanciest hazelnut ones—they might warm up nicely, but they don’t always froth or carry that velvety richness we expect from a full fat, dairy latte.
Why? They simply lack the natural fats you’d get in cow’s milk. And while the barista blends try to make up for that with emulsifiers and thickeners, I’d rather keep things simple. Whole ingredients. Straightforward methods. A little coconut oil because that’s the magic.

Coconut oil adds just enough fat to mimic that café-style foam. It also brings a subtle richness without making it taste like a tropical dessert. Plus, it’s good for energy, especially on mornings when sleep was more theory than practice (I’m looking at you busy mama with babies, toddlers and the school run to navigate!).
Making It; Simple, Speedy, and Frothy
You don’t need to be a barista or own any fancy gear for this one; just a pan to warm your almond milk and a blender to work a bit of frothy magic.
The process is delightfully simple: warm, blend, pour, sip. Everything goes in while it’s hot… the coffee, cocoa, a touch of sweetness in the guise of honey or maple syrup, your warmed almond milk and that sneaky teaspoon of coconut oil. Just a quick blitz, and you’ve got yourself a velvety, café-style mocha with not a synthetic frother in sight.
Feeling ready? The full recipe’s at the end of this post, waiting for you when you’re ready to give it a go.

Tips & Substitutions
- Oils & milks: Swap coconut oil for a teaspoon of oat cream if you have that stashed away. It’ll add body too, though with a lighter taste.
- Flavour lifts: Pinch cinnamon, a drop of vanilla extract, or a smidge of almond extract if you’re feeling indulgent.
- Caffeine-free tweak: No coffee? Use two teaspoons of cocoa, heat with water, then whirl with the milk and oil and then… hello, mocha-meets-hot-chocolate.
- Kid-approved version: Skip coffee for little ones and let them have a “mocaccino” alongside you. They’ll feel part of the adult fun without the caffeine crash.

Storing & Prepping Ahead
This isn’t really a batch prep kind of drink though I have made up the blend minus the milk and just added hot milk on the day. The coconut oil can go a bit firm, so if you do mix ahead, give it a good stir or re-blend when ready.
Take a Moment, Mama
If you’ve made it this far, you deserve more than just a latte. You deserve a long, hot bath, a nap, and someone else to do the tea run. But for now, let this little drink be a reminder: you can do small things that nourish you. You can claim five quiet minutes. And you can create something warm and wonderful from what you already have.

Dairy-Free Mocha Latte
A creamy, chocolatey dairy-free mocha latte made with simple ingredients—no frother or fancy milk needed, just pure comfort in a mug.
Ingredients
- * 1/2 mug (approx. 120ml) good-quality almond milk (or any dairy-free milk of choice)
- * 1 shot of espresso or 1 tsp instant coffee dissolved in a splash of boiling water
- * 1 tsp cocoa or cacao powder
- * 1 tsp coconut oil
- * Dash of maple syrup or honey, to taste
Instructions
- Heat the milk: Gently heat the almond milk in a small pan or microwave until hot but not boiling.
- Blend it up: Pour the hot milk into a blender or smoothie maker. Add the coffee, cocoa/cacao, coconut oil, and maple syrup or honey.
- Froth and blend: Blend on high for 10–15 seconds until frothy and fully combined.
- Serve: Pour into your favourite mug and enjoy immediately — creamy, chocolatey, and completely dairy-free.
Notes
Tips:
- Why coconut oil? It adds healthy fats and body to the milk, helping create a creamier texture and better froth without the emulsifiers found in expensive “barista” dairy-free milks.
- Make it your own: Add a pinch of cinnamon or a drop of vanilla extract for an extra twist.
- Budget-friendly: No need for fancy milk frothers or pricey syrups — this is your healthy, cosy, barista-level treat at home.
