Social media burnout is real, especially for solopreneurs and mompreneurs. We’ve got family life to attend to, cooking to do, small businesses to run – usually set up to fit around family life & its responsibilities – as well as get the word out about our offerings and services.
So, when you’ve spent hours tending to the social media monster creating posts and reels, replying to comments (if you get any), and chasing those fickle algorithms with little to show for those efforts…
… is it any wonder you’re feeling drained? Gah!
I was certainly feeling that social media burnout. Marketing my small and mighty business was taking up more and more time, time I didn’t have available to sacrifice. Sound familiar? This all left me feeling so tired and disheartened and, talking to other women running small businesses, I clearly wasn’t alone.
Which is why I started to look for alternative ways of getting the word out into the wild west that is The Internet.
And I’ve good news to report; you can get off this exhausting social media treadmill by shifting your focus to an old-fashioned email list and leveraging Pinterest.
I know. Who’d have thunk it? Emails seems so fusty and yet we still need them for functioning in everyday life. You can’t open any sort of account without one so they’re not going anywhere just yet. Yes, my friend, an email list and regular email newsletter is THE WAY to get directly in touch with your ideal audience.
Why Social Media Isn’t Working and Why You Need An Email List
Social media platforms are unpredictable. You’ve probably noticed which is why you’re here. Algorithms frequently change, reducing the reach of your content. Your posts—even and often especially the ones you spend hours crafting—can be buried within minutes. Instead of connecting with your ideal audience, you’re left competing for fleeting attention.

Here’s why an email list and Pinterest work better:
- Direct connection: With email, you communicate directly with your people, bypassing algorithms. These are people who have taken the effort to sign up and join in your email list as they like the cut of your jib. They’re not fly-by-night-oh-that-reel-looked-spiffy sort of followers. They’re very interested in what you have to offer.
- Control: You own your email list. That’s your property. In contrast, you’re effectively “renting” space on social media platforms, which means all those followers? Well, they’re not really yours and can disappear if a platform changes its policies or shuts down.
- Longevity: An email sits quietly in someone’s inbox and is infinitely searchable long after you originally sent it out. And as for Pinterest content, it doesn’t expire like a Tweet / Shout Out on X or Instagram story. Pins continue driving traffic for months, even years and the best part? The ½ a billion users of Pinterest are actively searching for your specific services so you’ve got hot leads just ready to enjoy what your business has to offer.
How to Start An Email List
An email list allows you to stay in touch with potential customers who have already shown interest in your business. There’s no social media burnout, capering to the mad and seemingly random tunes of Instagram or TikTok’s algorithms, but an opportunity to connect to your people in a genuine way.

This audience have given you permission to contact them directly—a privilege social media doesn’t offer.
But how to get started? This is often the biggest hurdle mompreneurs and solopreneurs struggle with when trying to shift away from social media. Thus here’s a quick and simplified step by step:
- Create a freebie lead magnet (that’ll be the technical, marketing jargon). This is a free resource—like a checklist or guide—that your audience finds valuable and signs up for, giving you their email address to add to your list. For example, a gluten-free recipe guide if you’re in the food niche…. Like me! Or maybe The Best Poses for Photographs on your Wedding Day if you’re selling your wedding photography services. Or what about 10 Best Study Habits You Never Knew Existed for school tutors. You get the drift and feel free to check out my Freebies page for more inspiration.
- Build a landing page. Create a simple webpage where people can sign up for your lead magnet by entering their email address.
- Write a nurture sequence. A short series of emails to welcome new subscribers, introduce your business, and encourage further engagement.
And now with AI you can do this So. Very. Fast.
Like, crazy fast. What used to take a week (and is what often holds people back from starting an email list) can take less than a day.
If you’re still feeling nervous about using AI to help you in your business, have a peek at my ebook, The 60-Minute Lead Magnet Challenge that I created specifically for busy mompreneurs (like me!) that gives you the prompts for ChatGPT (free, btw) to help you create your content. There’s also more in depth info in the ebook to start you on your way from social media burnout to email list success.
Use Pinterest to Grow Your List
But how do you get the word out to your people so they actually sign up for your freebie?! Well, do let your social media followers – those who actually see your content – know about it… but then set up your evergreen and ongoing digital marketing strategy.
It’s oh-so-pretty too. Ladies, I offer you PINTEREST.
Pinterest isn’t just for recipes and home decor. Oh no. It’s a powerful search engine. When you share content on Pinterest, it’s discoverable for a long time, sometimes years, unlike social media posts that disappear in hours.
So here are the simple steps to leverage Pinterest:
- Create the graphics aka “Pins”: Use Canva to design eye-catching pins promoting your lead magnet.
- Write keyword-rich descriptions: Describe your content with terms your audience searches for. Example: “easy gluten-free recipes for busy moms.”
- Pin consistently: Schedule pins using tools like Tailwind or Pingenerator to keep your content visible whilst you’re cracking on with the important things in life, like your family and your business rather than your time and life feeding The Algorithms.
(I put together a “How To” online course that will walk you through the whole process and have you set up within a day. Have a look by clicking on the image below.)
Remind Me; What Are The Benefits of Switching From Social Media to An Email List?
In summary, transitioning from social media to email and Pinterest offers:
- Time savings: Spend fewer hours posting and more time on high-impact activities. Like your life, your health, your family and your business. Hurrah!
- Higher ROI: With your business head screwed on firmly, you’ll know ROI is what you need to consider when you’re marketing. Frankly, emails deliver better results for your effort as readers of your regular newsletters actually like you, your products / services, want to know more and thus want to buy more. Alas, social media doesn’t guarantee that.
- Sustainability: Build a long-term strategy that doesn’t rely on social media trends or the complete and utter burnout of your body, mind and spirit.

Stop struggling to keep up with social media. It’s pants and you know it.
Instead, start creating marketing strategies that let you connect meaningfully with your ideal audience and help you grow sustainably in this wild world of The Internet. So, what are you waiting for? Let’s get your email list up and running today.
